in class last night, the teacher asked us to think of the best present we'd ever gotten for its own sake (that is, not because of the sentiment behind it, or because of who gave it to us, etc. but just because it was the physical THING itself that you so wanted). He asked us to remember what it felt like to finally have that.
Then he asked us to remember a time when we'd done something we didn't ever think we'd be able to accomplish and what it felt like when we finally did. And he said we'd just proved to ourselves that money could never make us happy, that happiness would only come from the personal accomplishment. what was frightening is that for some of my classmates, this was the first time they'd realized it. Most of my classmates are in their 30s and 40s. That's the scary bit.�
