Adventures in grilling

2004-05-25 - 9:06 a.m.

Damn. It appears that diaryland ate my entry yesterday.

Lookie, we have valuable lessons learned from the inaugural use of my miniature Weber grill:

1. Using three firestarter cubes for such a little pile of charcoal is firmly into the realm of overkill. But FIRE GOOD.

2. I had a cool new pair of tongs and was damned well gonna find a good use for them, thankyouverymuch.

3. Long matches...yeah I shoulda grabbed some of those. Trying to wing little ones deep into a pile of charcoal without putting out the flame's like a party game. A dangerous party game. WITH FIRE.

4. Having a (former) boy scout around when there's an outdoor fire is good*. It also means he'll rearrange the coals like a kid playing with legos.

5. Itty bitty grill means you can't go psychooverload on chopping up piles of veggies if you want everything done at once. We had to resort to the wok on the stove.

6. Even after oiling, it took two of us to pry the tuna steaks off the grill.

7. A good enough tuna steak still tastes wonderful even if it's cooked a few minutes too long. And the kisses were worth it.

8. Glazing said tuna with chipotle pepper sauce and serving it with cold mango sauce...oooooh lordy that was good.

.

*Um, have I ever mentioned receiving a fire extinguisher as a gift after setting multiple kitchen fires? Hey, it's been a long time...

Pretend it's 10th grade. Leave me a note.
